Enjoy wonderful views of the city of Nairobi and the Great Rift Valley while hiking the Ngong hills on our Nairobi day Tour. Ngong Hills are a beautiful sight to behold. These hills are located 35.3km from Nairobi, an hour and a half drive from the city center. They are situated in the Ngong Hills Forest Reserve, a 21,000 square kilometer gazette area. In total, there are seven hills and four tower over the rest. They make for an excellent hiking experience. The highest hill has an elevation of 2,460m (8,072ft) and gives picturesque views of the Ngong area, the city, and the Great Rift Valley. Here is more about the hills that inspired Baroness Karen Blixen’s highly acclaimed romantic epic. This majestic mountain range spans the western end of Nairobi. It is famous in many historical works, including Karen Blixen’s film “Out of Africa”.
Pick up from your hotel or airport at 7.45 a.m and drive to the base of the Ngong Hills, where the hike will take place.
Arrive at 9.00 a.m . We shall enjoy hiking all the peaks that form a series along the mountain and our guides will help you learn about the history of the place.
The hike up Ngong Hills starts from Ngong town at the northern foot of the hills, 1,961m above sea level, and traverses the whole range to the southern end at Kona Baridi. This takes about 4 to 5 hour to complete. The first kilometer from Ngong Police Station is a gradual ascent through human settlements until you get to a barrier indicating the start of the Ngong Hills forest reserve. From here on, you go past a wind farm, before climbing the first steep hill leading to an area populated with Radio repeater station masts.
The trail thins out and descends into a trough before emerging on to the next steep hill. Just when you think the worst is over, the rolling hills seem to keep popping up, with each taking its toll on you. Thankfully, the views all round are magnificent, making the effort worthwhile. On a lucky day, you are likely to encounter buffalo around the fourth hill, on account of the abundant bushes at these higher altitudes on the range. To your right is a fantastic view of the Great Rift Valley, while on the far left is a view of the City of Nairobi. Your tour will end at 1300 hrs and depart Ngong Hills for Nairobi.
